111 Canterbury Road has been in use as a surgery since 1971. Doctor RK Das converted this residential property for use as surgery. Nowadays a new building is often put up, but this is how it was done at the time.
Dr Das retired in 2000 and for nearly a year, to February 2001, the practice was run by the health authority with locum doctors and nurses, whilst Mrs V Das had agreed to stay on as practice manager to ensure some continuity for the patients.
When we looked back into the registration history before 1971, patients were registered with Dr. McKenzie and were seen in 124 East Street and later in the old vicarage in Bapchild from 1958 to 1971. Going back further, the same patients were registered with Dr Birch from 1948 to 1958. Some patients were registered with Dr Birch before the start of the National Health Service in 1948.
The surgery building was split level and the upstairs front room was used as nurses room. With the help of a small extension to the side and the back in 2004 it was possible to change the layout and the use of the building and move all clinical services and the toilet downstairs. Thanks to the height of the ceilings, the floor of the rooms in the back could also be levelled up to make the building DDA compliant.
